Everyone here is an adult and I think we can have an intelligent conversation without getting upset.

We will be selling in a few year, one of the choices that I will have is doing my best to find the best agent and negotiate my best rate. Finding that agent will probably be based on less scientific evidence than I prefer. I am not sure what the rate would be for a 350k home.

The second option would be to contact a debating federal service through an affinity group (credit union or alike) and get the commission discount(2k) on the back end.

As we will be retiring, when we sell does not matter, how much we have in pocketbooks matter.

I recognize that a RE agent would likely recommend the contacting the local agentas it places them in the spotlight and gets a third party out of their paycheck. I appreciate that position, other than that are their other reasons I should not use a referral service? Things I can think of: higher selling commission, less experienced agent.

Full disclosure: I have used referral services for paid moves, the listing agent was average the agent we bought with was fantastic.
