^^^^ Ditto what you said. I don't know exactly what it's chemical makeup is, but it's some sort of mosquito repellent/vector control. They usually come around my neighborhood between 10-11pm when everyone's already inside, and you can hear (and see) them from a distance.
I don't think it's really harmful to us, but in my neighborhood we just say as a rule of thumb to stay inside while they pass and wait about 10-15 minutes after they've sprayed before going back outside

Back in the old days, the "fogging machine" (and it was a white, very thick fog that hung around for quite a while) used DDT unless I'm sadly mistaken. It's considerably safer now and virtually invisible.

But still a good idea to go indoors if you see them.
Here in Decatur, the tend to drive around at dusk.

People even today have no idea that they can help prevent mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes lay their eggs on still water. If you have anything around your yard that collects water, such as toys, old tires, birdbaths, puddle spots in the yard, try to fix it so that it doesn't collect, or the water gets replaced or at least stirred up once or twice a day, every day.
