Wow.... I choked on $350 this month and assumed that it was because my pool pump has ran 24/7. I went out and bought a mechanical timer to install to shut the pump off from 8pm-8am to try to cut the bill back. I actually feel better now... sheesh.

How big is your house and how many people live in it? We're in a 2800 sq.ft. house with 4 people.

If you have a $750 bill in a residence... "Houston, we have a problem." Hire an electrician if you can't figure it out.

Nlambert, I expect you might save about $50/mo cutting back.

Pool School PRO Excerpt: The Real Cost of Operating a Pool Pump

I figured out in Florida that the time a pool pump needed to run was from about 9am until an hour before sunset. Movement of the water and chemicals during that time prevents algae growth. The lack of sun prevents it during the night.

You aren't alone. My dad's and one of my sister's in high months don't run far behind that. Dad's had about all he can have done and had it checked for leaks, efficiency, etc... it's a large, older house and been this way for yrs.

Haven't gotten my bill this month yet but now I'm anxious! We live in a historic home and, normally, our winter bills are much, much higher than summer.

Must be something wrong with the OP's cooling system. My electric bills are always quite a bit higher in the winter (I have two heat pumps).

The previous owner gave us a copy of the last two years of her utility bills and they averaged no more than $200/month in the summer, and were around $150 a month in the spring/fall. Usually saw a spike to about $450-$500 in Jan-Feb. We keep the AC on the same setting as she had it, close all of the doors, keep the lights off, etc... Range is gas, so no electricity to burn from operating that.

The house is well insulated and the HVAC is new, so the only thing we can think of is the pump playing a part in that. Nonetheless, if $50 a month is saved, it will only take a little over a month to recoup the cost of installing the timer. Looking at the chart and considering we have a 1.5 HP pump, we might expect savings of around $100 per month. If that is true that would be an excellent savings!
