I live in California. My kitchen is being renovated by a contractor. They removed the old floor tiles. There's also 3 layers of lenolium under the tiles which they did not remove. The areas where the old cabinets were don't have lenolium and are about 1/4" deeper. The workers used perforated cardboard (from the supermarket) to level the subfloor, located where my dishwasher will be installed , before installing the hardibacker. On another area they didn't use any shims at all to level off the subfloor where old cabinet was. I insisted to the contractor to level off the subfloor by putting roll roofing or other appropriate leveling compound. He gave me a bunch of excuses, and that it's ok if the hardibacker is off by 1/4" and that they can level it with more thinset when they start tiling. He also acknowledged that they often use cardboard box as shims. Is it okay to not level the subfloor before installing backboard in the kitchen if it's only off by 1/4"? Also, is it acceptable to use perforated cardboard as shims? I attached a cardboard used as shim.
