Let's revisit the operative word "landfall".

No hurricane is makin' "landfall" 'round these here parts.

Unless a small hurricane formed over Guntersville Lake and came ashore.

I remember what what was left of Harvey come through Huntsville around August 30. It happened in the middle of the night so most people probably missed it. I remember being woke up once hearing a lot of wind and heavy rain. Not much more than a typical summer thunderstorm. By the time Irma gets here it may not be any more than that.

At least hurricanes give people plenty of lead time. At least people usually have time to get out of the way if they want to. With a tornado a lot of times people have little or no warning so there is no time to escape.

I think we all now have an experiential sense of what happens to hurricanes by the time they get up here. What puzzles me is why the schools decided to close. I understand the idea of "abundance of caution" but this appears to go well beyond that.

With the state of emergency declared, Monday was a free day without needing to be made up. Not sure about Tuesday.

Robby Parker said he didn't want kids getting wet at the bus stop this morning. When I was younger, my mom gave me a raincoat and an umbrella and wished me luck...

Welcome to next generation of pampered children and the current generation of managers/ administrators who are afraid of making tough decisions.

I was at a gas station Monday night, and the clerk said he sold out of water and was about to sell out of gas. I asked him why, and he responded "Because of the storm". I asked what storm, and he replied "The hurricane".

If you know the "Lumberjack" song from Monty Python, this is one of those times I sing a couple bars of it, substituting the word "idiot" for "lumberjack."

It hasn't been all that long when kids went to school when it snowed. Now even the threat of a flurry and they close down. That seems to be a nationwide thing too, not just here. Fear of lawsuits perhaps?

And I'll never understand why the Arsenal, both the Army and NASA, were closed today.
