We need more hotels. I've got family coming in October and a was surprised by the prices. More competition is good.

Add a 7 story 100 room Hilton Curio at 106 Jefferson St downtown.
The old boarded up Hale Bros furniture store across from the Clinton Ave parking garage

Well, I was going to edit my original post to add the Hilton Curio, but Edit is not available. Might be because it's been quoted? Or it could be a temporary forum anomaly.

It seemed like 30 years ago the only large hotels were the Hilton Downtown and the Huntsville Marriott. Now it is hard to keep up with the number that have been built since then. The rate they are being built are OK with a booming economy in the Huntsville metro area but watch out if the economy slows. If that causes the vacancy rate to go up then we would see a reduction in room prices.

Correct, and the Hilton wasn't all that large. The Sheraton at University and Jordan Lane may have still been existence at that time too.

Huntsville has really had a dirth of really nice hotels for a long time, but that's changing, and changing rapidly. I suppose the upward trend started 3 or 4 years ago when the 12-13 story Westin was built.

Seems like I remember that after the Hilton/Holidan Inn shut down, there were no hotels downtown until the Embassy Suites was built. Now that is changing, and the whole nature of downtown has been changed for the better because, at least in part, of the new hotels.

2004 - Big Spring Partners formed
April 1, 2005 - Downtown Huntsville Hilton becomes Holiday Inn
June 2005 - Owners put Holiday Inn up for sale
2005 - Non-profit Big Spring Partners buys Holiday Inn
2005 - Big Spring Partners sells hotel land to city of Huntsville
Nov. 1, 2006 - Embassy Suites opens
Dec. 15, 2013 - Holiday Inn closes

Note that Huntsville was unhappy when it heard that the Holiday Inn was put up for sale in 2005. Huntsville had spent many years trying to get a second hotel by the VBC. They wanted more hotel rooms to attract more conventions to the VBC, Since there was no guarantee that the Holiday Inn would not end up being closed Big Spring Partners bought the hotel and its land from the owners. The Big Spring Partners then sold the hotel land to the city of Huntsville.

When we came here in 2006 for our 10 day house hunting trip, the Embassy and the Marriott were pretty much the only two decent choices. The Embassy was booked solid, so we stayed at the Marriott. While we were at the Marriott, we had items stolen from our room and they found a 45 under our mattress that a previous guest had left, so not the best experience there. Soon after, the Homewood Suites at Providence opened, and we stayed there for over 30 days while we closed on our home and moved/husband started his job. Thankful Boeing footed those bills HSV desperately needed more choices as far as nicer hotels are concerned.

Good grief! That's not exactly the experience that Marriott would like guests to have.

That particular hotel has a lot of miles on it. It's been there for a while and is heavily used. My son went to Space Camp many years ago, and there wasn't room in the normal housing, so they bunked them in the Marriott. You can imagine the care a bunch of 12 year old boys would give a place.

It might be time for a major refurb.
