I'm an unemployed engineer that's planning on moving to Huntsville soon, and I see in the applications for jobs with some companies that they ask if you live in a HUBZone and that may give preference. My plan was to live in an apartment for a year or two while I got to know the area and then buy a house, so I'm kicking around the idea of picking an apartment in a HUBZone to help with getting hired, since the location is temporary anyway. Of course, HUBZones tend to be in "bad" neighborhoods, but I'm wondering if there are any decent apartments that stand out?

That looks like over half the city. Plenty of decent apartments in those areas.

Without knowing a budget, I can say the better part of town is HUBZone area located in the wedge between Hwy 72 and Hwy 53. This includes more attractive apartments like Paddock Club, Dunwoody Place, Addison Park, The Lodge at Johns Road, Emerald Ridge, 18 Watercress Green and some others.

This site might help: https://www.apartmentfinder.com/Alab...lle-Apartments

And if you google "huntsville apartments" you'll come up with many more. You can overlay it onto the HUBZone map that Teko linked.

There are many, many apartment complexes here.

Budget wise, according to Rentcafe.com, the average 1BR is $685/mo in Huntsville, so I'd like to get something for that or less. I'd like a washer/dryer in-unit. I have an elliptical machine that I will probably move to Huntsville, but it wouldn't hurt if there's a basic gym in the complex.

If the HUB map is correct I would look at the apartments around Providence. Paddock Club and Main Street Apartments will be the cheapest, Walden and Bridge Water will be slightly more, but newer and nicer. Moderne and Providence Place will be the higher end options. All of these are in good areas and most are walking distance to Providence town center with restaurants and bars (Taco Mama, Moes BBQ, Mellow Mushroom, local mexican, and Brickhouse sports bar). It is also a short drive to Kroger, Publix, Walmart, Target and just about as close as you can get to Research Park/Arsenal where you will most likely be working.

I have lived in both Paddock Club and Providence place. Never had a problem at either and would routinely walk home from Moes late at night. Be prepared to pay an arm and a leg at Providence Place though.
