I have had too many run ins with Allstate. I have had to sue them in small claims to get them to pay everything on one auto accident caused by another driver who had them and had to involve an attorney to get them to pay the actual value of another vehicle that was totaled by a driver that had them. I know a couple of people that had them back when we had tornadoes and their homes were damaged. They both had to hire lawyers to get Allstate to pay the claims and get their homes repaired. They had roof damage with blue tarps on them for months and Allstate was giving them the run around. I would not **** on an Allstate agent if they were on fire.....by far the absolute worst insurance company to deal with in my experience over the years.

That's my families experience basically with Travelers. I'll never use them. The only reason my dad finally ever got them to pay was because he recorded every phone call with them every week for 1.5 yrs and finally caught them on tape.

We had AAA. A very reasonable premium and was very good when we replaced our roof due to hailstorm damage. It was a pleasure to deal with them.

Geico and Safeco. Shop your rates every year or so, especially if you see a drastic rate increse (which we did on our homeowners after the tornadoes in 2011) and try to bundle (auto, home, boat, etc.) to get discounts. For homeowners, discounts are offered for deadbolts, claims free history, security systems and distance from Fire Department and fire hydrants (3 miles or under used to be the best rate).

For auto, discounts for ticket free drivers, taking online driving classes for Seniors, and of course, if your car is paid for liability is cheap. The higher the deductible you get, the lower the premium. You'll want that deductible money on hand in case it is needed. The distance you drive to and from work/school is also key to the insurance premium.

Know that you can change companies at any time, not just upon policy renewal! You will receive a prorated refund from the company you left.

Also, check Company and Rating Search - Best's Credit Rating Center because you want a reputible company that is financially stable and able to pay out any claims you need them too. Here, they are graded like school report cards.

You can run comparison quotes on websites like insurify and thezebra. If you bundle homeowners insurance with auto, you'll get discounts. We've had State Farm forever, but the only reason I have stayed with them is because they lowered my premiums when I went to them with a quote from another provider.
