Alabama was one the last states to have a case of the COVID-19.

Confirmed cases.

But last I checked on whnt last week, the local hospitals were reporting they didn't even have test kits, and had to send samples to the CDC and it took 7 days to get results.

Now there are 22 confirmed cases as of this morning. It's likely there are many times that many here, and elsewhere, simply because we have not been doing extensive testing to really know.

I don't know if this is all overblown or not. But I do know that we will all know one way or another in about 3 weeks.

We'll never really know if our sanitization and distancing efforts are overblown or not - if those efforts are successful, the some will say it was all unnecessary. If the efforts are not successful, then not enough was done. Can't win for losing.

I'm from NY but planning to move to Alabama in a couple of years. My son is north of Montgomery now. We talked about the panic going on all over. I'm not going to let this ruin my life and be obsessed with it like so many others. As a matter of fact - besides the grocery stores - most other businesses have few customers and it's a pleasure to find a machine at the casino or be able to stroll an aisle in a regular store without having to walk around others carts and bodies.

Due to how bad the panic is here - the grocery store warehouses are low on product and I feel bad for those without transportation or the elderly who may only be able to do their grocery shopping once every other week. There will be nothing left for them to buy.

Of course it's political. When the people running the country ignore the growing crisis for weeks, you bet I'm going to bring it up. One week it's a "Democratic hoax" and the next it's a national emergency.

And then you wonder about people panicking? It's because they feel they no longer have a government they can trust.

It doesn't have to be political. It's common for people to blame the nearest convenient thing when they're up against something they don't understand and can't control. Blame the gov't all you want. Please provide one thing the gov't could have done - that you would have embraced - 6 weeks ago to change all this? Actually, if you can provide one right now, anything at all, that would be awesome. Something real, not a fantasy - there is no vaccine.

I would prefer some more intelligent rhetoric on TV, no question. But the dr.s in Italy and Spain and France ain't exactly stupid. They all saw it coming. Nothing changed the course of events. And nothing here would have, either.

More tests? Yep, we'd have more data and more confirmed cases - but it wouldn't have changed anything. We have people RIGHT NOW ignoring the direction of the CDC - including the entire state of Florida - so there's no evidence that anything would have changed that.

Actually, there was a big, giant whiff that the government didn't do. They didn't implement the protocols that have been in place and used multiple times over the past 25 years. That's why, while South Korea is testing 10,000 people a day, the United States is testing a fraction of that number.

My daughter was in London last week. When this hit the fan Wednesday, I booked her a flight home Friday. When she landed in New York, were there any public health officials there? Anyone at all? Nope. One customs official. And this is true of friends who just flew home from India.

It is absolutely absurd to suggest that the government couldn't have done anything. Just face the facts. This administration was sluggish, partly because they were more interested in the short term economic headlines than they were in the long-term health of the country. And I say that as a Republican.

Which Aldi?

I was at Aldi on University and Sparkman today after 1100 and this one had plenty of milk, eggs, cheese, and had some cases of water.

I'm a couponer, so I didn't look for TP or PT or fresh meat, I wasn't paying attention to those areas.

As I said - I'm in NY currently and plan to move to Alabama where my son has been living for the past 6 yrs. I love your state and the people there! I've had enough of winters and high taxes here in NY. I do know my son stopped at a Publix I believe in Jemison and he said they didn't have what they normally would.

I'll have to look you up! I've been a couponer for 40 years and had pretty much stockpiled TP and PT with all the deals at Dollar General. Always best to be prepared and pay the lowest prices possible as you'll always end up using it. I love Aldi's and am so glad more have opened in Alabama - otherwise I'd be lost!

Our "Chicken Little" leaders and talking heads running around screaming that the sky is falling have talked themselves (and us) into a recession and maybe worse. The best advice I've heard is to turn off the TV and get off the hysterical social media sites. I knew I should have bought that land in Tennessee years ago.

"Something" that the Government could have done, took place 30 years ago, not 6 weeks ago, and that was to not outsource the production of a tremendous amount of vital supplies and merchandise, to a foreign, and Communist, no less, country. The "conspiracy theorists", and I have to admit that it sometimes includes me, believe that this was the development of a bio-weapon that went astray, and got away from the lab, and out into the public, where it went sideways. Others expand on that, and feel that it was a "test run" to see how effective the virus was, at eliminating opposition to their political beliefs.

Whatever the case, this outbreak has demonstrated that you cannot trust a country that will develop a virus such as this, and if/when it gets released on the public, purposely or not, A) a vaccine isn't available; and B) even if it is, they threaten that they won't provide it to you. Furthermore, this same country is also responsible for supplying you with a number of other drugs that people use to sustain their daily life, and those drugs, too, are held hostage to this country.

YES, this situation IS political, whether we want to think so or not....and no, very little could have been done in the last 6 weeks, as this situation has been brewing for a long, long time.....while our political "leaders" watched it happen.
