Does anyone know of a good repair shop where I can get work done on the rear axle of my 2004 Dodge Ram 1500, crew cab, 2 wheel drive pickup?

My regular shop is too short handed to do this work and it is way above my skill level.

Symptoms include ratcheting when turning / accelerating and a high pitch metallic sounding whine at speed.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Did you check to make sure all your gear oil has not leaked out causing the problem?

I have the same truck but a regular cab. On the back(rear bumper side) there is a rubber plug you can remove to check the level in the center of the rear end. The oil should be level with the bottom of that hole. If low you need to make sure if you have a normal or anti-spin differential so you get the correct fluid.

Pulling the back plate off to remove any old oil and sludge and then filling with new oil is also a option if you have not ruined the differential. Best of luck.

Also a Haynes Repair Manual for your pickup can walk you through this and many other easy checks. Youtube is also your friend.

Many years ago, I had a car that made a similar noise. It turned out to be a bad universal joint, which was a fairly inexpensive repair.

Rocket City Offroad. 5476 Research Park Blvd NW, Huntsville, AL 35806. (256) 883-1131. Did excellent work on rear end of a 4Runner for me. By the way it was also a 2wd.

Since I work in Decatur, looked around here and Morgan County. Found a small shop east of Somerville. Based on the parts list on the receipt, they did almost a complete rebuild for just over 1K. So far so good.
