Or I guess southerners call them "lightning bugs".

My daughter was very excited to see them at night, but so far we haven't seen them. (Actually, I think I saw *one*, but I thought it was so abnormal to see one alone that I wondered whether I was perhaps hallucinating but I saw it flash several times.)

When are the fireflies around in visible quantities?

I was wondering the same thing but I have seen a couple the last few days.
Has anyone seen any hummingbirds? I saw one a couple of months ago but nothing since then..

It's a little early. They'll come out soon. You'll need to find a nice big, uncut field to see lots of them.
I hear the hummingbirds have been here for a month or 6 weeks. Seems a bit early to me, but my friend who "tempts" them with feeders says she's been seeing them for several weeks now.

On my evening walk tonight (which I've been taking into the darkness due to the excessive heat, bleech), I altered my route to take me to an unleveled wooded area where I did see a few fireflies here and there. Not an impressive number, but they were definitely there! Fun stuff. But I'll wait a few weeks before I keep my daughter up past her bedtime to see them.

They are called both depending on what part of the country you live. They are also called 'glow worms'

We've had 'em around for at least a couple of weeks, but the numbers aren't as many as last year. Differences like that are pretty common, probably having to do with weather, predation, and disease. Mother nature isn't perfectly consistent in her balancing act.

I first saw one a month ago - just one...

and then about two weeks ago they all came to visit.

'Seem to like the lower lying area better than the elevated woodland - I see more by the front yard near the road. However, the City just sprayed for mosquitoes - I do not know whether the pesticide is selective, but I did notice less activity concerning all flying things last night.

Make those Crane flies go away...useless creatures.

Still have some of my fireflies, though...had to carry two outside from the kitchen, to my daughter's delight. Finally, a little bug she can touch without being bitten.

Hummingbirds - glad to hear that. I have my newly purchased feeder out - still looking for the one that moved with us...never had any luck in So. FL. Hopefully here I'll fare better. Have it hanging in the butterfly garden with all my painfully slow-growing beneficial flowers...can't complain, bought them dormant.

I have a butterfly box as well, but am busy chasing the wasps away...gonna buy or make a bee box, too...we have a Carpenter bee we named Alfred (I, II, III...) that will need a new place to dig when the house is re-sided and repainted with insect repelling polyurethane-based paint...his girlfriend currently lives in my porch mill work. They're good for the plants but bad for the house. I'll give them some soft, untreated wood to move in to. Read it can work. Fingers crossed.
