I will be coming to Athens next Monday. I'll be starting a job at the power plant. I don't know anything about the area. I'll be there for a few months, and will be living out of a hotel. I'm getting mixed "reviews" about the area as far as race relations go. I can someone personally tell me how things are there. I've been told that I'll be ok, as long as I'm home before dark, because I'm a big black man. I'm sure this isn't true, but I need someone to ease my mind, and be honest with me.

Thank you very much. Also since it's a small town, I was wondering what people do for fun, and where's the nearest big city.

LOL! Someone was pulling your leg. Either that or there are a whole lot of black folks who dine out at night that didn't get the message.

Bigger cities - Huntsville, B'ham, Nashville, longer treks Memphis and Atlanta

Home before dark??? I don't think you should have any problems Although I am white, my brother in law, who is black and from Yonkers, New York has never had any problems around here. But like anywhere else in the country there are certain areas throughout North Alabama where anyone would have to be careful to an extent

athens is a great place to live... though if you are looking for big city entertainment, you are out of luck.

huntsville is relatively close, but not really much of a city. both birmingham and nashville are about 2 hours away and they may offer you something.

Athens is a nice place to live. However, the Tri-Cities area, Decatur, and Huntsville will all offer a greater selection of dining, entertainment, and shopping oppotunities.

I believe recreation in and around Athens is primarily focused on outdoor activities and high school sports. Fishing and hunting is great in the surrounding areas.

Just don't do any jogging after dark. A running black man will invite a 911 call and you will be checked out. You wouldn't stand out in Detroit, it being 83% black....
