Hi! Just moved back to the area from TN where a midwife delivered my last child. I know there aren't midwife practices in Alabama, but does anyone know of a good (preferably female) OB that advocates or is at least comfortable with natural childbirth? Thanks in advance!

There are some alternative physicians or 'health professionals' in Five Points, at least I seem to remember some sort of advertisement when we first moved here. Let's keep you afloat until someone who knows the area steps in.

'Meantime, I Googled Doula and got this:

Doula Index: Alabama

http://www.drmoz.com/doulas.html (This one seems less 'fluffy')

My wife is 8 1/2 months pregnant and planning on natural childbirth. Her OBGYN is Dr. Sharon Callison at Tennessee Valley OBGYN on California Street next to the HH Women and Children's Hospital. My wife loves Dr. Callison. TV OBGYN bills itself as "Women Caring for Women." That was important for my wife. Here's the website: Tennessee Valley OB GYN - Women Caring for Women in Huntsville, Alabama

Hope that helps.

I'm glad to hear that!! I looked up TV OBGYN and thought it was my best shot, so it's good to hear the name of one of the doctors there!! I appreciate the help and for the doula info listed above as well!

Thats wierd because before doctors, midwives have delivered babies for centuries....and my grandmother had all 12 of hers at home too. In fact, my sis had her kid at home too. But then laws may have changed in some states. Few may have had complications, understandably, but I SO glad for the c-section...its the only way Id go.

Alabama laws do not allow midwives.

I think most OBGYNs will work with you on natural childbirth. It's not the odd thing it was almost 30 years ago, when I had mine.

There is (or used to be) a midwife in Athens: Roberta Ress. Check the yellow pages. Good luck!

She may reside in Athens, but I'll bet she has to go to Tennessee for deliveries.

Dr Conrad's children were all born naturally, and he was better than any midwife I could have imagined having. He worked with me with positions and breathing and was just absolutely wonderful! The nurses at Crestwood were amazing with all of that too.
