Every city is famous for something, rather it is the people or the food. NYC is famous for the Statue of Liberty, San Francisco is famous for the Golden Gate Bridge, Chicago is famous for the Sears Tower, but what is Huntsville famous for besides the rocket and space?

Engineering. Defense. Space. The rocket that brought man to the moon and back, for one thing. The Saturn V that would have been the engine for Apollo 18 is on display in the Davidson Center today and used for research. A lot of the movie Apollo 13 was filmed at Marshall Space Flight Center including the weightless scenes. Today our engineers are designing the next generation 'launch vehicles' (rockets) far a return to the moon, a trip to Mars plus developing the next generation shuttles.

Some of these folks are involved in development projects like high-intensity lasers for use in ground and space defense (remember Reagan's Star Wars Missile Defense? Think it's not real?). Support and maintenance elements based or supervised from Huntsville support national missile defense and weapons systems like the Predator remote-controlled unmanned aircraft used daily in the theater of war. Also the Patriot missile.

In 1995 I was priviledged to meet Admiral Alan Shepard in Huntsville. He was the first American in space in 1961 and ten years later walked on the moon with Apollo 14. Where else can you meet such storied astronauts outside of Cocoa Beach or maybe Houston?

We are home to a new biotech campus, too. Visit www.hudsonalpha.org for more detail on that.

Just space and rockets? Maybe so, but that's hardly anything to be scoffed at. The Statue of Liberty, Golden Gate Bridge and Sears Tower are iconic and historic, certainly, but none will defend you in time of war or transport you or your progeny to Gene Roddenberry's Final Frontier.
