Any other thoughts about how the Huntsville economy will fare in the next few years now that we are a couple months into the new year?

Any worries about NASA or Army budget cuts hurting our economy?

A little bad economy won't hurt anybody.

Families will be forced to cook at home and do cheap things like play cards and board games. We'll have to wear our clothes more than once, and maybe wear down the soles of our shoes more. We might have to plant a vegetable garden and grow our own. We might become more careful how we spend energy.

It could be worse. It could get worse. But nobody can predict the future, so we may as well enjoy what we have today!

(Uh....I'm sounding like KE!)

Many families will be forced to do far more than be frugal if our economy goes south. Also, while no one can't predict the future, there can be good indicators as to how things will go financially in the near future.

I like your philosophy and there is a place for it, but there is also a place for educated analysis of the current economy and also how that should affect (frugal) decisions in the next five years or so (such as buy a house in Huntsville now or wait a couple of years.)

I know Huntsville may get 3,000 jobs from the NASA jobs in Florida in 2010. I'm not sure about the Army.

Read the article...

The reason: cotton's production costs.
"They're higher than soybeans and corn," he said. "You've got to be in the field more with cotton."

[...]
Bragg, 38, is the owner and operator of Bragg Farms, among the largest operations in North Alabama.
On this day, he's trying to plant his 500th acre of corn before a cold front, packed with rain, moves into the area that night.

By the end of the day, he has accomplished his goal.
In four days of planting corn, he's already equaled the amount of cotton he'll plant this year.

Jobless rate hits 22-year high - al.com

"While Madison County again reported the state's second-lowest jobless rate, at 6.2 percent, there were 5,000 more unemployed residents here than in February 2008."

"Madison County has future job growth prospects with the infusion of Base Realignment and Closure commission positions, about 4,700 direct jobs, by 2011."

Hmmmm, we have 5,000 more unemployed, and only 4,700 more direct jobs from BRAC, but some of those jobs will be filled by people coming in from other areas.
