"yes" property value will go down down down, when all the crime "from section 8" comes to the area. You know this is true. It happens to all big cities, look at birmingham. A very good example. Nobody wants to live in all the crime that comes with public housing. Somebody explain this to me " if you put them in a good area why would that make them want to do better and get off welfare? I have to pay good money to live in this good area, if you cant afford it (and are on welfare) you should have to live were the government housing is.

Default Stabbing at Stone Manor

Thanks to SouthHsv for reporting the news on this one...

Stabbing at Stone Manor

Stabbing at Stone Manor « South Hsv Civic Association Blog

We have received information, since verified with police sources, about a stabbing that occurred two weeks ago at Stone Manor Luxury Apartments housing project involving individuals living illegally with a Huntsville Housing Authority resident. The police have been publicly silent about the incident, and the media have not reported it, either.

Here are the facts we know:
On February 19 between 9:30 and 10:00 P.M., a fight occurred in an apartment at Stone Manor between two unrelated males, one of whom stabbed the other, causing a non-lethal injury. Even though the law prohibits public housing residents from allowing non-residents to live with them, the two men and a woman were all living illegally with a female public housing resident. It is unknown if children also lived in the apartment.

After the stabbing, the perpetrator fled the apartment and tried to drive away, but wrecked his vehicle into a fence. Leaving the keys in the ignition, he went back into the apartment. A bystander who witnessed the wreck then reached inside the vehicle and took the keys.

After returning to the vehicle minutes later and finding the keys gone, the perpetrator fled on foot. Six police cars arrived shortly afterward, including a K9 unit, and a search soon found the man hiding in a wooded area adjacent to the complex, whereupon he was taken into custody. Although it still needs to be confirmed, it appears the perpetrator has a prior criminal record.

The police report on this incident was not made public, and the only reason we know about it is due to a tip from someone who lives in the area and witnessed the police activity. When our primary police contact was asked why the report had not been made public, he said it was because the incident had been classified as a “domestic dispute.”

While this incident may meet the broadest possible definition of a “domestic dispute,” there is no legitimate reason that a fight between two unrelated men living illegally in a public housing apartment should not be disclosed to the public.

As for the HHA, we have since learned that the housing authority knew about the three illegal residents but apparently did little to evict them or the law-breaking resident. It is unknown if any of these individuals have since been evicted.

None of this should really shock anyone. When the HHA first purchased Stone Manor, a law enforcement official told us that many of the crime problems associated with public housing do not come from the residents, but from the hangers-on: The friends, boyfriends, sons, and other relatives who tend to hang around and/or move in illegally.

The HHA can talk all it wants about its wonderful “screening process” for residents, but who is screening the non-resident riff-raff these projects attract?

So once again, the assurances of the HHA and the mayor that moving public housing into middle-class neighborhoods will have no negative impacts on the community have proved hollow. Reality has a rude way of beating dreamy fantasies every time. Or sometimes it just stabs them.
