State senator defends Huntsville Housing Authority notification law (Op-ed by Paul Sanford) | al.com

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama _ I am grieved by the recent position taken by Huntsville city leaders regarding Senate Bill 205, the legislation requiring the Huntsville Housing Authority to give at least 30 days notice before buying property.

There has been an intentional distortion between public housing and fair housing laws. These are two separate issues.

The Huntsville Housing Authority, Mayor Tommy Battle, the City Council and, unfortunately, several prominent downtown organizations are now using this distortion as a scare tactic. What is most disturbing, though, is the lack of discussion about the appropriate role of public housing in our community versus the long-term negative impact that poverty has upon a communit

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Mayor Tommy Battle has decided to keep the Huntsville Housing Authority Board of Commissioners intact. Last week, Battle re-appointed housing authority board Chairman Dr. Phil Redrick to a new five-year term expiring in August 2017. Redrick was originally appointed in 1997 by then-Mayor Loretta Spencer.

Battle notified Redrick of his decision in a letter dated July 31. His new term begins next Wednesday.

"Your continued commitment to the City of Huntsville and your future service as a member of the Huntsville Housing Authority is sincerely appreciated," Battle wrote.

It's funny how this article is no longer on the al.com front page even if you hit more articles. I tried to find it earlier but it seemed to have disappeared. Your link finds but good like finding it via search browsing the site. I think someone is trying to bur the article due to the "no so favorable" comments. Something stinks in twickenham...

I'm sorry, but Paul Sanford needs to shut his trap. I for one am THANKFUL Mayor Battle is on top of this VERY SERIOUS issue. This is INDEED a very big issue in regards to Fair Housing, and this has put Huntsville square in the crosshairs of the DOJ. SB205 puts HSV in a very bad position. Fair Housing very much applies to the housing authority, as HSV takes federal funds to provide public housing. HSV cannot abide by SB205 without violating HUD Fair Housing statues.

But he is right...although this is not a "scare tactic", it is pretty scary. This could have very bad ramifications for our area, and it is something EVERYONE should be concerned with. Someone also should ask Sanford why the other class 3 municipalities (currently Montgomery) were exempted from this bill so it ONLY applies to HSV, not to any other of the 24 housing authorities in AL.

Politically, this is a golden opportunity for the DOJ (who already has AL as a target due to the immigration law) to nationally embarrass HSV and the state of AL as a whole, not to mention cost the city millions of dollars in potential legal expenses.

And, we already have HUD testers in our area. HSV Utilities has already been "tested" and blew it. The city also had to undergo a civil rights review last year.

Huntsville Housing Authority to use $5.7 million from Councill Courts sale to buy or build 148 public housing units | al.com

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- By the end of this week, the Huntsville Housing Authority could be $5.7 million richer.

On Monday, Executive Director Michael Lundy said the agency will use that money to buy or build as many as 148 public housing units to replace apartments taken off-line over the past few years at Councill Courts, Sparkman Homes, Searcy Homes and Drake Towers.

"From my perspective," said Lundy, "Huntsville Housing Authority is in a great financial position of being able to create an additional 150 units as we go forward."

Developers ask Huntsville Housing Authority to delay closing -- again -- on Councill Courts land sale | al.com

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- For the fourth time the developers of the $85 million-plus Twickenham Square project near downtown have asked for more time before closing the deal.

On Monday, the Huntsville Housing Authority's volunteer board of commissioners agreed to push back the closing until the end of this month at the request of Bristol Development Group and PGM Properties.
..

Huntsville taxpayers are paying for the $9.8 million, 941-space parking garage that will serve Twickenham Square, and the City Council has already hired a general contractor.
