(mid late 80s) Jobs were everywhere. If you sent out 5 resumes (assuming you lived in the area) you were guarenteed a job (especially in the engineering and science fields). I am sure that condition is non existant today, however, how bad is it there at the moment?

Well - Engineering and Science jobs abound aplenty, even with the layoffs that have just started. Plenty of work at DoD prime contractors, small support companies across a multitude of fields - NASA, ARMY, Missile Defense, BioTech, IT. I would venture a gues that even right now you could cast your rod in the water and catch a few offers very quickly.

Back then Sanmina was big thing (former SCI) with 4-5 plants in the area. In the mean time globalization and outsourcing happened and few plants have closed down, and the remaining have slow down.
Chrysler plant was still around (in its original form, not 2-3 takeovers later). And the so on. Manufacturing is limping.

LOL, I remember SCI, Intergraph, the TWO Chrysler plants (next door to each other) and there was a tire plant around Madison somewhere.

Is the Kaffeeklatch still there?
