I have a family member who really wants to move from Rochester, NY. She is orginially from Alabama. She is a software test engineer and wants to move to Atlanta, but I suggested Huntsville because Huntsville has a lot of high-paying software engineering jobs. Could anybody comment on this situation so that I can address your comments to her? I really want her to move to Huntsville!

Depends on a lot of things.

How did she react to your suggestion of moving to Huntsville? Does she know anything about Huntsville? Does she know anything about Atlanta? Is her preference to move to Atlanta researched and reasonable?

Is she already married? Husband's desires? Have kids?

What type of software testing does she have experience with? Does her skill set match what is in demand in Huntsville (vs. Altanta)?
Does she have a clearance?

There was a thread that might help:

She might envision Huntsville to be like this:

She works for Xerox in Rochester, and she works with bar codes or something she said. She wanted me to help her find a job. I suggested Huntsville because it offers a better life quality. She wants a job that pays over $70,000 and wants a house worth about $100,000 to $200,000. She knows little about Huntsville, but travels to Atlanta alot. Atlanta attracts her because of other things besides a job! So I personally think that Huntsville is right for her because it's in her homestate, it pays better money, it offers a better life style, and she has a four-year old daughter!

Is dad coming along for the ride?
If so, what line of work is he in? What does he think about Huntsville and Atlanta?
If not, what does he think about his kid going so far away from (presumably) Rochester?

Well, dad is a popular barber in New York. He's from Alabama too, and I keep on trying to talk him to moving to Huntsville because Rochester is real gloomy. He likes Atlanta, but has never been to Huntsville. I have never mentioned the "kid move" to him!

In today's world, I think she can research about the job market in Huntsville from Rochester as well as anyone. More importantly, it's not just the job, it's a life choice. So in order for you to convince her that HSV is right for her & her family, you need to know what their preferences are. Bottom line also is that they need to come in town for a visit.

Another thing, high tech jobs here in HSV tend to be in the aerospace & defense industry. She may not be familiar with this industry and therefore not comfortable. There's a lot more than just being a software test engineer, there's industry culture, business practice, etc.

All you can do is provide her with information, answer her questions, and let her make a choice.

If she has a stable job, she is nuts to move right now. The other shoe hasn't dropped on the economic situation. In addition, the military and aerospace industries could have some major shifts and downsizing if we pull out of Iraq and avoid getting into new situations. Needless to say, if she doesn't have clearance, her possibilities will be severely limited.

I dunno....Atlanta's a pretty exciting town, a lot more than Huntsville! Don't be pushy...just suggest that she might investigate a couple of other areas that would be a bit smaller and easier to find a house in that price range. I'd suggest Birmingham, too.

What are ya'll saying: don't move to Huntsville and just find a job in Atlanta because that is where she wants to be................or take a visit to Huntsville so that she can be familiar with in case if she wants to move there?
