hey first post here, I'm looking for something to do this weekend with a friend of mine. So I was think about going to Monte Sano and just relax there. Are there any spots you can just park at night and star gaze? If not do any of yall know of any places in Huntsville or Madison where I can do that?

Monte Sano State Park closes at sundown. Consider renting a cabin:

Quote:
We are having a special on our cabins from January 1, 2010 to March 31, 2010.
Cabins will be $65.00 Sunday thru Thursday and $75.00 Friday and Saturday for two adults. Additional adults will still be $10.00 extra per night.

There are camp sites as well at Monte Sano. $12 for a primitive campground.

If you are interested in stargazing. the Huntsville Astronomical Society meets once a month for events at good stargazing locations. Also at Hayes Nature Preserve (http://www.huntsvillepreserves.com/events.php - broken link) often has night hikes and there's a clearing in the middle of the preserve where they have on occasion held "official gatherings" for meteor showers. They have an on site preservationist Soos Weber who is a great lady and very enthusiastic about people being able to enjoy the preserve, including at night - safely.

So you rent a cabin and just don't stay the whole night. This would give you the evening access that you are looking for.

oh I see, good plan. If there's nothing else I can do then I'll do that, I just thought there was a free option.
anyone know how cold the cabins get during the winter? it's still supposed to be really cold this weekend.

From zenjenn's links:

The next Hays Preserve event is: "Feb. 7th Privet Round Up and Nite Ecohike (RU at 1 p.m. Ecohike at 6 p.m.)".

"Our VBAS Members and Guest Speakers present a variety of Astronomy related programs in our Planetarium every Saturday at 7:30 pm". The VBAS Planetarium is at Monte Sano State Park. Check to see what they have going on this Saturday.

***

The Park gives you a load of firewood for the fireplace, plus the cabins are heated / air conditioned. IMO the cabins can be a nice cozy romantic getaway. It's a pleasant stroll from the cabins to VBAS (IIRC less than a mile on trails or road). If it's clear and dry, you can see the trails.
