Later after irene, noticed that most hotels were waiving pet fees for those in flight....here on coastal SC, in my city, there was one shelter that allowed pets...but only one pet per person.

Neither does Red Roof Inn. And when we know which route we're going to be traveling with our dog, we use PetsWelcome.com. Our dogs are like any other family member... and there's no way we'd leave them behind.

I have evacuated with pets several times. The main thing is plannig because very evacuation numberous pets get loose and run after being in a vehicles a long time at rest stops. Kids can be very careless in opening doors to get out when pet is not leashed or contained.Locally athe polcie deptment site list motel avilable for evacution across the state and list on pet policies which is what I use.Even then I know many who called ones that don't normally but di with evacuations.
