Has this ever happened before? I don't remember two named storms ever forming before the official start of the hurricane season. I guess the next storm won't form for a while though if it's going to be an "average season"

1887 for 2 storms in May, and 1908 for two storms before June First (March and May)
and 2006 if you count Zeta because it lasted Dec 2005- Jan 2006, and Alberto which I believe formed in May.

Ah, so there were two seasons when that happened, even though it was over 100 years ago

I don't think 2006 counts because Zeta was counted as part of the 2005 season, not 2006, since it formed before January 1, 2006.
