You are inland right? Take care man, don't do anything rash. Tornados, high winds, darkness of night, heavy rains, and flooding storm surge are all a risk tonight so hunker down my friend and God be with you. It will be a long night.

Why does it seem hurricanes only come by during the night around here?

I was about 5 years old in Ontario Canada..was sent home from school and only had to walk about 3 or four blocks home..Thank God my mother met me at the top of my street..as I couldn't make any forward movements at all..It took the two of us to navigate half a block to the house!! This was long before the rain even started..still sunny and fairly clear~~ Following that..Much of the rivers and creeks overflowed ..bridges washed away..and only reason we didn't get flooded was because my home was middle of block and at the highest elevation. Many homes at the lower elevations had much damages from flooding. It's scared the heck out of me..but felt safe with such a terrific strong mother who made us feel safe !! I don't even recall what happen to the power..as we all ( mom/brother and myself~dad was away on business trip ) made a fun night out of it..all slept together ( like camping) playing games etc..

But I did learn later the damages done by Hazel..people (friends) I knew lhad horrendous damages..roads washed out and many casualties noted!! The write-ups can still be found online~~

snip~~ This precisely the area I lived in (Etobicoke)~
Quote:
The worst-affected areas were communities near the Humber River, Holland Marsh, and Etobicoke Creek. Prone to flooding, the Humber River raced downstream from Woodbridge when an earthen dam failed. In the weeks prior to Hazel, Toronto had received copious amounts of rain, and the soil could not hold as much as 200 mm (7.9 in) of rain; consequently, over 90% of it went into Toronto's waterways. The Humber heavily flooded Weston, and killed 35 people in Raymore Drive. Holland Marsh was severely flooded; while no one was killed, the economic losses were severe as the region's crops were harvested but not collected. At the village of Long Branch, the Etobicoke Creek killed seven people and swept numerous dwellings into Lake Ontario. Toronto's infrastructure also took a major hit, with as much as 50 bridges being washed out by the rising waters.
ETA~ this link surrounding Ontario Canada's devastation!

^^ Just maybe those suggesting that mis- identifying dangers for media hype just maybe read what happen's when weather folks make the wrong diagnosis~~ It cost lives and lack of preparations lead to loss of lives~~ I'd rather have reports suggesting the worst and best case scenario..than to dismiss the danger..Who the Heck can predict Mother Nature??

1. IT WASN’T SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN

At 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 14, 1954 the Dominion Weather Office issued its final forecast on the approaching storm which read, “The intensity of this storm has decreased to the point where it should no longer be classified as a hurricane. This weakening storm will continue northward, passing east of Toronto before midnight.”
BTW~~ I lived about 20 miles west of Toronto then!!!!!

All of the above.

Sometimes I think you guys are speaking another language. I think it would help me if you and the others who post here could just give a brief synopsis on what the maps are showing it would be very helpful.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who get's confused by the technical jargon and abbreviations.. I think, at least I hope I'm not. I think I'm just the first person who had the guts to ask.... Lol

Daytona Beach damage.. I dont think gusts went over 90mph. Problem was how many times it went over 75 and how long it was sustained over 40
