agree and I have to admit, I'll probably add to the problem as retiring to a beach community is a dream of mine.
***sighs*** some times love hurts, although I'm a coward. first storm I'll probably be outta there.
Do what we did, and choose a community near the coast, but inland. Williamsburg gets the occasional hurricane threat, but it's pretty rare (compared to the coastal communities). The last hurricane to do any damage here was back in 2003. Florence, for us, was just light rain and breezes.
Meanwhile, since we're between two large rivers that feed the Chesapeake, we have 3 beaches in our community. Smaller waves, but plenty of sand, salt air, beach umbrellas, girls in bikinis, beach bars, and dolphins. If you do want to go to the coast, it's an easy drive. This is why it's a top retirement destination; you get close-to beach living without the hurricanes. It's one solution, at any rate.
Or, if you really want to be on a coast, another option is to retire to the beach in Southern California. They don't get hurricanes, just earthquakes. But that's out of reach for most people these days.
What's amazing is how many people I've seen in the news who said "I got out of NY/NJ after Sandy and now I'm dealing with this in the Carolinas"....out of the frying pan and into the fire, these people do not get it.

But, where can you go these days that isn't "into the fire"? The west has fires and toxic smoke covering several states. The middle of the country has tornadoes. Flooding and torrential rains seem to be hitting all over. Blizzards are getting worse each year in the Great Lakes area. Etc. Etc.

Bizarre. Leaving the northeast because of a hurricane is like leaving the North Pole because of a heat wave.

Show us some stats on how things are getting worse....thanks. Especially that Great lakes comment.
