The American Red Cross is urging families to register on a new Web site that will help them stay connected with relatives after a hurricane.
It is free to register on the Web site, SafeAndWell.org.
After a hurricane, people can update their information with a message such as "I am safe and well" either through the same site or by calling a toll-free phone number. That way, friends and relatives searching the site will see the message, and hopefully stop worrying if they can't immediately get in touch after a storm.
Red Cross officials want to require the online registration as part of registration at hurricane shelters.
The Red Cross says the Web site worked well after deadly tornadoes struck Kansas early last month.
