I haven't purchased a used car in over 11 years and have little experience with the process at a dealership. I'm looking for something in the 8-10K range (used) and considering a 2007 Kia Rio (automatic). Do dealers give you a hard time when you try and take the car to an independent Mechnanic for a diagnostic? That is a deal breaker for me - I want my guy to take a look at it first.

I'm assuming I should negotiate price first (they are asking 9,999 for 2007 with 57K miles), then take the car to mechanic and ask for additional reductions if mechanic points out issues that need repair. I know the price between some used and brand new is shrinking, but I can't really afford a brand new car so used is my only option. If you have any thoughts on the Kio Rio or similar alternatives I should consider I would appreciate the too. Thanks!
