The members of the United States Coast Guard are oft overlooked and lack the respect they deserve for their service and duty which requires them to be in some of the most dangerous places on earth. The USCG in Alaska is the finest in the world at doing what they do protect our coastline and the seafarers that ply it's notoriuosly dangerous waters. As a former commercial fisherman and a recreational boater I always found some sort of comfort knowing the USCG was ready to respond to any in need, thankfully I never had need.

Sincere condolences to the family of that young man for his bravery and service.

Rest in Peace

We were hosting two of Travis' four legged friends during the past several weeks at work. My heart broke knowing why is family had to go to AK and then WA. Last week as his grandfather and I were talking, unbeknownst to us at that time, Travis passed on. A family friend called me at work shortly after and I found out.

I have Coastie friends and they deserve the same respect that any military branch deserves, my friends are on either coast as well as The Rock in AK.

Rest in Peace Travis

I agree with all the posts above. They each are moving for different reasons.

I was proud of the community who went to the airport to support Travis' family and perhaps his C.O. who made the flight to bring Travis home.

I hope the community continues to support the family. And I hope his C.O. received what he needed so he could take some of the caring, respect and appreciation back to "the surviving" Coast Guard members where this AK unit is located.

I stopped in at a local stop and shop type store to grab hot chocolate and donuts for the manager and myself, saw the newspaper and grabbed a copy. I too am proud of the response at the airport! Way to show support southeast Idaho

So true- whereas other branches do a lot of training and preparation for war time, the U.S. Coast Guard is in The Real Thing every day.

My hearts goes out to Travis' family, friends and fellow Coast Guardsmen.

He certainly lived up to this:

Creed of The United States Coast Guardsman

I am proud to be a United States Coast Guardsman.

I revere that long line of expert seamen who by their devotion to duty and sacrifice of self have made it possible for me to be a member of a service honored and respected, in peace and in war, throughout the world.

I never, by word or deed, will bring reproach upon the fair name of my service, nor permit others to do so unchallenged.

I will cheerfully and willingly obey all lawful orders.

I will always be on time to relieve, and shall endeavor to do more, rather than less, than my share.

I will always be at my station, alert and attending to my duties.

I shall, so far as I am able, bring to my seniors solutions, not problems.

I shall live joyously, but always with due regard for the rights and privileges of others.

I shall endeavor to be a model citizen in the community in which I live.

I shall sell life dearly to an enemy of my country, but give it freely to rescue those in peril.

With God's help, I shall endeavor to be one of His noblest Works...
