There is a very good possibility I'll be relocating to the Idaho Falls area after accepting a position at INL. I'm looking for a place that has garages and allows small dogs. I've been looking online for apartments, but it's always nice to hear from the locals. Size required is 2 BR / 2BA or smaller (it's just me and my dog)...

Other amenities I would appreciate are a gym and in-unit W/D (or at least hook-ups).

I'm also not exclusively set on Idaho Falls, Pocatello and Blackfoot are also possibilities.

Thanks for any information, I appreciate it!

I don't think you'll have too much trouble finding an apartment here, but one with a gym may be hard.

You might want to take a look at rental homes; I've recently noticed quite a few smaller homes offered for rent lately.

As always, finding a place that accepts pets is harder here, just as it is in other areas of the nation, but it never hurts to talk to a landlord personally. Folks here do a lot of face to face business, and this is a dog lovin' town. It's been a long time since I last rented, but I didn't have much trouble getting my landlord to allow my old dog to move in with me once my landlord got to know her. I rented a small 2-bedroom that suited me very nicely for a couple of years with no problem after I agreed to make a pet deposit, and I got my deposit back when I left.

Thanks for the reply... I've noticed lots of available homes for rent as well. When I visit the area, I'll check some out...

I really enjoyed my year and a half at Eagle's Landing. Seemed very safe and very quiet. Couldn't ask for better location in relation to shopping, restaurants, hospitals, and proximity to the main thoroughfares. Good pool, workout room, and a clubhouse you can rent out for parties. Covered parking to keep your vehicle clean and snow-free. Allows small pets with a deposit.

There are also a bunch of people who work at INL there, so that may help your transition, too.

Well, the very good possibility became a reality and I'm now in Idaho Falls. I drove up from Bakersfield, CA - it took about 23 hours with all of the gas, food, dog walking, and resting stops... A very nice drive, with the top down for almost all of the trip too... I chose to take a more back route to avoid the traffic around Las Vegas and SLC (Bakersfield, CA to Lancaster, CA to Bishop, CA to Tonopah, NV to Ely, NV to Jackpot, NV to Twin Falls, ID to Pocatello, ID to Idaho Falls, ID), about 925 miles total.

I'm staying at the Hampton Inn near the airport until I find a place to rent. I have a few leads and will begin my search in earnest later today.

Congrats on your job, macadamia. I hope you learn a lot about living options today.

Tmp4 gave you a good tip above. Those apartments are also close to an INL bus stop if you'll be working at "the site" vs. the in town growing facilities. There are many other Condo and Apartment rental options. You know your needs and budget the best.

Welcome and I hope you will post here often.

Thanks for the welcome, I appreciate it!

I called Eagle's Landing and was very happy with what they have to offer. The only drawback is they do not allow dogs, unless I can convince a doctor to give me a prescription for a "companion / therapy" dog... (-:

I drove all over town today... even headed east up the hill on the way to the wind farm, where the big houses are... A very nice, albeit expensive area. I learned my hotel is only a couple of blocks from the river, so now I have a nice place to walk my dog. I found two INL park-n-ride lots, one on the east side in a church parking lot, and the other in a warehouse-type parking lot. Are there others in the area? I will be heading out to the site later this week for my first visit there. I have lots of questions for them...

Have you checked into Meadowwood Apartments? I know they accept pets.

The INL has several large parking lots. All you have to do is call- the phone directory has all the numbers you will need to find out where they are.

Yes, and they offer garages too...

I did check in with Meadowood Apartments. I was in contact with them after I was told I'd be receiving an offer but before actually receiving it. I got a couple of call backs between those times, but after actually receiving the offer letter at INL, I've not heard a peep from them. I have phoned a number of times and even tried replying to the email I sent. No one ever answered the phone (always to voice mail, all calls made during business hours), and to date, no reply to the email. I'm not bad mouthing them, just stating the facts.

I drove by the apartments and was less than impressed with how they were maintained. I decided not to pursue them any further.
