Currently, we live in the Madison, Wisconsin area and we are looking at creating and exit plan if you will. Our goal is to relocate to the one of the following areas; Anchorage (posted in the AK forum as well) or Idaho Falls.

My current job is that of a project manager/electrician in the commercial side of the industry. However, I've had a life long goal of learning software engineering. With the given global climate and the way that things are moving due to the "virus", I see this as an opportune time to start that education process (software engineering).

While the construction industry has been booming and is still doing very well, we are starting to see delays and project holds moving forward. Due to supplier shut downs this year, I see issues for the next 18 months or so in the trades and then who knows where things will go.

Whereas, this "virus" has moved even more people and business to the internet. Websites, apps, etc. have exploded and I see this as a long term continued growth. I know of several folks who's companies are going to continue remote work and remote meetings (while restricting travel), even after this is over. I think tech may be on the verge of a second "boom" if you will.

With that, I am curious as to the opportunities in tech in the Idaho Falls area.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and stay safe!

Just a friendly reminder. Posting the same content to different fora is prohibited by the T.O.S. The forum software didn't catch it this time, but best to not do so in the future. Good luck in your quest. I don't have anything applicable to offer, except that it sounds like a "tough nut to crack".

Under the local circumstances, if I were you, I would stick with the electrical construction if I was to move here. THere's a lot of software development that's already here and has been going on for years.
It's being staffed by folks who are mostly approaching their prime production years, and there aren't going to be lots of vacancies for the newbies for a while, I think.

I'm thinking there are fewer senior management-level electrical guys available, and though those jobs may be scarcer at the moment, there are some very serious pans that are well underway that demand a lot of electricity in the near future.

But I could be wrong. I was once closer to the biz community than I am now, and the virus has put the brakes on a lot of stuff here.

The only way for you to know the facts would be an extended visit here, I expect.

Hiring new employees is still very face-to-face, who you know, not what your résumé says.

It will take any newcomer some time to become known, and being known is still the best way to land a job here.
