The Milken Institute specializes in economics, and it has ranked large and small metro areas in the USA for some time now.
They rank in different tiers. The #1 tier cities all have all the required economic elements Milken believes are the best for stable growth. The #2 tier has fewer of them, and on down to the lower tiers.

Idaho Falls was in the first tier last year, at 7th place. Coeur d'Alene was the other Idaho city on the small city list in the first tier.

Congratulations, IF. One can download the entire report, in PDF format. Makes for some interesting reading, but will take awhile to digest. Could be yet another source for those contemplating a move from their current abode.

I find it curious that they rank CdA as a Tier One small city in sixth place, (down one from last year), but their neighbor just a few miles away, Spokane, is ranked as a Tier Three large city in 87th place, down from 68th last year. There is so much 'cross pollination' between the two that they are 'tied at the hip'.

Part of what they have to say about IF.

Idaho Falls is also considered one of the best places to live in Idaho due to its natural amenities, safety, and low cost of living, as well as access to high-quality jobs.71 However, only 29 percent of the population over 25 have a bachelor’s degree or higher, which is lower than the US average of 31 percent. The region also has comparatively low industrial diversification, which may hamper stable growth in the future.

It could be the difference in size between Spokane and C d'A. That would be rather like comparing apples to oranges I suspect, as Spokane is so much bigger.

I really don't put too much importance to this, as some city is always going to win. Rankings would only count if a city was to win repeatedly for quite a few years to be worth something, I think.
