I have read several news reports of meth/drug busts in eastern Idaho recently, and just came across a post here referring to Pocatello as "meth capital."

Just how prevalent is the drug problem in the IF area? I know it seems like it is all over, but was hoping the IF area was suffering less.

Is there a drug problem in Shelley? and what ages is this problem turning up in? Is it a problem in the high schools? how is it being handled?

I would think it would be conspicuous given the otherwise conservative atmosphere, am I wrong?

IMO, Idaho is just like any other state when it comes to getting in trouble. If you want to get in trouble with drugs, fights, etc. then you will find it. However, if you want to stay away from trouble, you'll be able to do so much easier because the majority of kids here are "expected" to keep high standards.

What I'm seeing here in NID is that while we hear about drug busts, in my kids' circles of friends they have never even met anyone who uses drugs. Pot smokers, they know...but that's about the extent of it..

There are some meth heads about, not like you'd see them in normal social circles.

Idaho has many remote areas so it tends to looks easy to those who do drugs. However I do know the law is working on it.

My personal issue is the graffiti that I continue seeing and that is a downfall of growth

I agree cleosmom on the graffiti. I hate it. I remember when I was a kid there was a guy in Idaho Falls who had a building that kept getting painted. He decided to sit on top of his building and catch the people who were doing it. If I remember the story correctly, he shot one of them in the foot with a .22. They stopped painting his building.

That, my friend is one of the good ol' boys themes that we might need to bring back.

Personally, I think of graffiti as art, and some of it really is. I know there is also gang graffiti, but kids who graffiti in my mind are prime targets for artists and others who work with youth to empower them and give them the attention they seek but channeling their self expression into more socially beneficial activities than simply defacing other peoples property. I understand the sentiment to catch and punish, and have seen some very horrific types of vandalism, but don't think they should be lumped in with for example the stunning artwork one sees at times on trains or those giant drainage ditch thingies or under freeways. Draw the kids back in (no pun intended), don't push them further out there!
