We are planning on retiring in a few years and are checking out different states. What we are looking for is: Horse communities-lower cost of living-low humidity and mild winters. Are there areas that would fit our needs?

You might want to give more detail. Aside from mild winters, you just described most of Idaho.

We're from MN. I hate the high humidity we have and the terrible cold and long winters here. We need to have acreage for our horses but we don't want the high prices. Needs to be a lower cost of living. We want to be somewhere where there is an active horse community.

Your vague description of wants still described most of Idaho, with the exception of cold winters.

Along the lines of Keim's suggestion, would you prefer to be near a city over 50,000 population, between 10-50,000, between say 3,000 to 10,000 or under 3,000?

If you want the mildest Idaho winters, you may want southeast Idaho. or the Lewiston area or the area along the Clearwater river to the east of it. or along the Snake River in south-central Idaho.

How much acreage would you prefer and what rough price range- under $250K, between $250K - 500K or would you go higher?

What type of horses do you have and what type of horseback riding do you do (casual, extended trail and / or competition)? Maybe that will help you get responses.

I sent a few links by private message earlier, but I was just guessing what might help.

I'll bet there's probably not one area of Idaho that isn't a "horse community". Horses are everywhere here. If you're into trail riding, Backcountry Horsemen of Idaho is well worth joining. They have chapters all over the place. Here's a link: Back Country Horsemen of Idaho
If you're an English rider, we're definitely a rarer breed but there are still plenty of us out here. Just fewer and farther between.

We just spent 2 weeks in NID and I was amazed at the number of horses we saw grazing everywhere.

Does not matter what size city. Looking for about 5 acres. We are interested in cow horse events and reining. Price anything under $250,000. We have never been to ID. We do have some old neighbors that have bought land out there and plan in moving when they retire.
NW Crow-thanks for sending the info

You are welcome.

Nampa hosted a Premier Reined Cow Horse event at the
Idaho Center Horse Park Idaho Horse Park Home Page

Looks like that is the local hub for this specific type event and lots of other horse activity as their calendar shows. About 20 miles west of Boise.

More info and contacts with like interested horse people here.
IRCHA

Good luck with your search.

I won't root around for more properties but I did just happen to see this one in Emmett which seemed to meet your basic criteria and would not be far from Nampa.

Emmett has been discussed a fair amount here if you want to read more and there are locals of Emmett and Nampa and other nearby cities around the site if you decide you want to ask more questions about a specific place.

Not a lot of cow horse related activities in North Central Idaho (Around Moscow, esp). But Moscow is the location of the national Appaloosa Breed Registry.
