I wonder why these can't be shipped to Victoria and trucked across Canada.

That would be too easy.

I suspect it costs more to get permits to truck all these oversized loads across Canada than it is to do it through the USA. Plus, they state this route has been chosen because of a lack of underpasses. The loads are so tall they supposedly can't fit under bridges.

I still wonder how they've gotten large equipment out there in the past...

New mega-loads arriving at Port of Lewiston | KLEW CBS 3 - News, Weather and Sports - Lewiston, ID - Lewiston, Idaho | Local & Regional

The first loads have arrived in Lewiston. I normally wouldn't link to KLEW because I firmly believe they have the worst news anchor on the planet, but I can't find any other active links about this recent development.

Looks like they think it's a done deal, then. Hope they're wrong! Thanks for the update.

I just saw these links posted on the Montana forum thread (started by Strudel, thanks!), discussing the same story about the megaloads.

This is very discouraging. I've not seen one comment by anyone in favor of this and looks like the powers that be are just going to steamroll it through.

I really hope you're wrong about it being a done deal. As far as finding people in favor, unfortunatly, there seem to be a bunch of people in Orofino who think it's a good idea. KLEW has done interviews with at least a dozen people over the last few weeks who are all in favor. One woman even said she thought it would bring tourism to the area because she thought it would be fun to go out and watch. Really.

Here is a new article: Imperial Oil denies report it will use U.S. 12 until 2020 for huge loads

As for this being a done deal, I honestly don't see where opponents will have legal ground to halt the shipments. Seems to me it's only being delayed, the lawsuit being based on the Idaho Transportation Department's permitting process. I sincerely hope it can be stopped; it's just so frustrating to see how the big corporations always seem to get their way at any cost.

It would be interesting to find out if donations have been made by Imperial into certain campaign coffers.

I guess that would make too much sense. To go along with the taxes in Canada, I'll bet the want some hefty permit fees to go through British Columbia. I still believe that the loads could be sent from one of the Washington ports and down I90. going through Spokane and Couer De Lane at night. I don't believe it couldn't be done and it would not raise anyones' blood pressure.

I Don't believe this equipment can't go down the I90 corridor at night from one of the ports in Washington. That's what the interstates were built for. Rather than using a country road along side a national treasure.
