I don't know Kellogg really well; Wallace has a beautiful historic downtown area--but both towns are too small to have what you're looking for. If you want nightlife, you'll have to go into CdA. Vibrant can mean many things--is Wallace vibrant? To me it is, because I'm a history buff and I love antique stores. But in my view it isn't "vibrant" the way a college town is. Why aren't you looking at Sandpoint? In your original post you said,

I like smaller towns that have walkable cores, a nice main street, a certian sense of vibrancy and community, decent amenities, decent nightlife options - an art and music scene would be nice, but thats not a given.
You can find all of that in Sandpoint. A beautiful downtown area, walkable, with a vibrant community spirit, great restaurants, and easy access to CdA and Spokane. It even has something resembling a nightlife. (But aren't you at all interested in the outdoor activities?)

It sounds to me as if you're really looking for a city, but you're willing to put up with a smaller town with a city-like atmosphere. Then how about finding a smallish town with easy access to a city?

I worked in Kellogg for 2 years, let me tell you that those 2 towns are a black hole that wil suck the life from your very soul. As far as your wants and needs go, those 2 towns will not suit anything but walkability.

Ill look into sandpoint, thanks for the tip! What I mean by a vibrant small town is a place Anacortes, WA or like Leavenworth, WA (minus the Bavarian village feel). Small towns with community feel, walkable main street, you see people on the streets, a few good bars, good markets, live music some times, artists, etc.
