DH was talking to one of our neighbors today and found out that there's been a VERY large mountain lion seen roaming around our little spot in Samuels. Apparently it was seen crossing right through our acreage, maybe 30 feet from the house. The neighbor is going to try and shoot it this weekend.

I knew we had black bear and moose and coyotes and elk and deer and foxes, but I had no idea lions would come so close to human habitation. Crazy!

We have a toddler and a small dog so obviously this is a little concerning. The dog will stay on leash for awhile and we'll keep our little one closer than usual, maybe just play inside for the next few days. Is there anything else we should do? Could do?

I actually think this is kind of cool but I'm almost 40 weeks pregnant and not so fast on my feet these days, so we should probably take it seriously, right?

We had lions coming right near the cabin till we got a pair of Great Pyrenees (livestock guardian dogs). We haven't had an issue with predators since we got them 8 years ago.

We've been looking into getting a couple of big working dogs eventually, but we're in a rental right now and the property is unfenced. Our house is on a bench overlooking Schweitzer and the valley below and faces the road. Don't Great Pyrenees need to roam? I'd hate for them to go after our neighbors' poultry or bother other people/disrupt traffic.

I love those dogs, though. So beautiful! Do you know of a good local breeder, misty?

I do know of a good small breeder, but you're right. They do wander a great deal. We're lucky to be out far enough that we have no real neighbors to bother. They don't tend to bother people but might go for the chickens if they don't know they are off-limits.

How are your shooting skills, Rose? Our neighbor never ventured out after sunset/before sunrise without a rifle two winters ago when a lion was about. The "big ol' tom"! I told that story on another thread. I thought our neighbor was talking about an overweight kitty...

Keep us posted!

I thought us down in SE Idaho were the only ones with excitement. Last week there was a mountain lion spotted in Bonneville County.

cats are to be taking very seriously. bears are curious and can be tolerated. cats are totally different. if its near homes it needs to be shot. good luck.

It's funny, but I was just talking with my neighbor last night, seems like at least 2 different ones have been seen in my neighborhood. Gotta start packing my handgun on walks.

On a related note, he told me he was watching my cat hunting a mouse across the field from his place....while a coyote was creeping up on the cat. He put a bullet through the 'yote. From what he said, the cat was as suprised as the coyote. One down...don't know how many to go, we've got a bunch around here. IIRC we've lost 3 cats so far this year.
