Hi folks: Just joined this forum and have loved all of your posts. What a great idea for those seeking change. I am actually from the west, born in CA, raised in UT, spent most of my life in MD. Enjoyed the east but crowding and the rat race have done me in. I want to return to the west. I never got over leaving it 40 years ago. My wife and I are planning retirement now(hopefully in 2 years). Idaho is at the top of my list. We don't need to live in a town but would like to be a short(1 hr) drive to a mid-size town. What area of your state do you recommend to someone that is extremely active. I enjoy rock climbing /mountaineering, paddling whitewater/flatwater, skis downhill/back country, hiking/backpacking, mnt/road biking. I see you have the Payette and Salmon rivers, City of Rocks, Sun Valley(toooo expensive for me)and lots of mountains. I know no area can have all of the above but at least some of the above. I'm really getting excited. Thanks for your time. Best, Charlie

Check out Mccall and Cascade and Tamarack areas. This is a very beautiful, forested, green area just north of Boise along one of the forks of the Payette River and some of the Salmon River forks are nearby too. This area known as Long Valley north of Boise is said to be one of Idaho's most scenic areas. You are in the craggy mountains with a lot of classified wilderness(some of the largest in the nation) areas nearby and then the big city of Boise is just a quick drive away with all of its ameneties and a very modern, busy, and growing airport. There a tons of natural lakes everywhere and a large lake in McCall called Payette Lake. This place will melt your heart, literally.

Here are some links I found.

Cambridge would fit several of your wants. We are only 30 miles or so over the hill from Tamarack and you might get a bit more for your money in housing right now here than in Tamarack. A couple of years who knows how the prices will go.

You can google Cambridge,Idaho for their web page with more information.

We are about 30 miles the other direction from rafting and Hells canyon dam. You can cross country ski all over this valley and there is a rails to trails trail here that is 83 miles long.Biking or cross country ski. The trail goes from Tamarack the town ,not the resort , to Weiser. McCall is 59 miles up hwy 95.

We are 30 miles from shopping in Weiser population in the 5000K range and 50 miles from Ontario ,Oregon for most anything else you can not get in Weiser. 100 miles from Boise.

Council is also a very nice town but the closer to Mcall and Tamarack the higher housing costs are going to be.

Chris

Thank you very much. I like the prices in Weiser, prices in Cambridge pretty good, the prices in McCall Did they find more gold up there. I do like the mountainous feel of the homes in McCall. The other areas seemed to be in the valley. This might be better especially in the winter time. I'm thinking the road crews do a good job near the resorts in the winter.
Any one have thoughts about the area around Salmon or Challis? Thanks Charlie
