We lived in Watertown for awhile and my wife hails from Williamsville. If you were in Buffalo during the blizzard of '76 or '78, you surely know what the wind can do. Many utility poles were just about totally covered with the snow. But then maybe that's just typical for NID?

I'm just outside the Adirondack Park and we get heavy winds that drift the snow real well. BTW are you hopping on your cycle to come out to Lake George? In a few weeks I'll see 50-75 cycles in a pack!

Lake George is what I was using to try to describe what CDA was like to my relatives who think of us moving to Idaho and immediately say something about potatoes. Funny you two mention that.

Funny how old threads come back to life! I remember the "Blizzard of '77" very well. A month of near-zero weather with 3 feet of snow on the ground...then 70 mph winds and another 2' of snow IIRC. I remember many houses buried in drifts. Spent the weekend stuck in high school, all the roads were closed and impassable. Remember the "iron snow drifts"? Hard packed snowdrifts that covered cars...when they were dug out with front end loaders cars were trashed. Never saw anything like it-snowdrifts were so hard that you could drive over them without sinking in.

Do they still do the "Americade" rally at Lake George? I won't make it that far...but did just buy a new bike better suited to longer distance "adventurer" travel than what I had. Hope to cover some miles this summer.

eta, looks like it's still on:http://americade.com/index.php?optio...-page-headline It was always a good time, much more "family" and touring bike oriented than say Sturgis. People were always nice and I never saw anyone get out of control. Only thing is...too many of the roads are paved! The best riding starts where the pavement ends.

Yes, the village seems to generally enjoy the bikers that come. Knowing the backroads around the village is a help when Americade week rolls around. We live on a major route that brings bikers from the south and east. I've not been to any of their events but the news reporters usually write positive reviews of the proceedings.
