I am considering living in a yurt in North Idaho, does anyone have experience or knowledge about this type of living?

We came very, very close to buying a yurt from Pacific Yurts in Cottage Grove, OR. I am very, very thankful that we didn't. We ended up building a cabin and since that time I've known several people who do (or did) live in yurts elsewhere and they have said our climate is really a bit too harsh to live comfortably by most people's standards.

In my neighborhood, there are two different families living full-time in yurts. One family I'm thinking of has a couple of small children and they absolutely love living in a yurt. I think they were originally planning to build a house on their land but have enjoyed the yurt life so much that they now plan to be in it forever.

My husband and I have definitely considered a yurt, but I don't know how well I could deal with round walls. Our eventual plan is to build with strawbale, but until then I think a cabin would be more our speed.

We also considered a yurt, but since we have black bears on our property we decided to have real walls! Maybe there are no incidents on record of bears clawing their way through yurt walls, but I just wouldn't feel safe.

We looked at a property with a a yurt style cabin and everything looked crooked to my eye. I'm kind of a balance fiend and realized they had the fireplace off center as well as the kitchen island. It caused a domino effect in how everything else was placed. It couldn't be fixed without a major redo so we passed. Consider stuff like that if it matters.

The other factor that decided us against a yurt is that yurts are a pretty short-lived type of housing. We built the main part of our cabin for the same amount of money that we would have spent on the yurt and we ultimately have a permanent and appreciating asset. Made far more sense to us in the long run.

When would be the best time of year to set up shop in Bonner Ferry? We are thinking that most of the snow will be gone by mid March, nights will still be cold but daytime temps should be fairly nice.

Hmmm...yes, the snow may be gone by mid-March, but it may come roaring back in April! And May!

We've had plenty of years in which the snow was not gone by mid-March. Depends on the snowpack and how the property is situated.
