I've heard there are many water and sewage problems up Burke Canyon and around Wallace. Anyone know if it's still true or has it been cleaned up? It looks like a beautiful canyon, thought about getting a place up the canyon 4 or 5 miles out of Wallace.

I think there was something in the paper about that several years ago. Lots of people were on spetic, and the ground was too rocky for them to perk well. IIRC they put in a sewer system to fix the problem. I'm not positive about this.

BTW, I'm with you, that's a neat area. Great access to national forest, and a lot of history. You might want to check on any issues with water contamination from the old mines up the canyon. One of my favorite stories, back in the day, there was a good sized city up that valley. The valley is so narrow, when they built a hotel, they actually had to run the railroad through the hotel.

Great area to go explore if you're in the area, a drive up to Glidden Lakes is a good way to top it off.

Some cool history: http://www.ripleysghosttowns.com/burke.html

Glidden lake (the one you can legally drive your rig to) has a nice big white crusted spring on the bottom that feeds the lake, I've kayaked over it many times.
Burke is a funny little old mining village. Many photo ops there.

The photo of Burke during the 1913 flood reminded of the PBS program featuring Burke. I want to know if anyone has ever heard of James Finley Bunch who worked the mines about 1950. He probably moved there from Butte, Mt with a wife daughter. I believe they lived in the canyon at that time. He might have looked like he had native american ancestry. I know that this might not be a regular thing to ask at this site, but I figured I'd give it a shot. Thank you
