The plan designates 275,665 acres of the Boulder-White Clouds marked by white peaks, mountain lakes and spectacular scenery into three separate areas: the Hemingway-Boulders Wilderness, the White Clouds Wilderness and the Jim McClure-Jerry Peak Wilderness.

Obama is scheduled to sign the measure at 11:55 a.m. in the Oval Office.

This article has a few more details about the vet: Vet Fights for Gun Rights

Apparently, he had a stroke last year, and the VA has declared him not competent to handle his financial affairs. It's unclear from the article what the basis of that finding was, and there are some comments in the article from those who know him that disagree with that finding.

Maybe folks can now understand a bit of why the Boulder/White Clouds are so special. As good as they are, those photos on't even scratch the surface of what is there. They're just a little taste.
You're welcome. If anyone wants to see more photos just search online. There are a lot of them.

Here's an update:

President Obama Signs Landmark Boulder-White Clouds Bill Into Law | News | Boise Weekly
Quote:
"One of the things we've also been trying to focus on is leaving a legacy for the next generation in preserving this incredible beauty, the God-given blessings that we've received—those of us who live here in the United Sates of America," Obama said. "I think everybody here knows that one of the prettiest states that we have with some of the greatest national treasures is the great state of Idaho. I am very proud to be able to sign this piece of legislation."

"This is a remarkable area. It is used by fishermen, hunters, rafters, people taking hikes. It is not only beautiful, but it's also an important economic engine for the state—attracting tourism, creating jobs. ... We want to urge the American people to visit these new, incredible Wilderness areas, and recognize that not only will this give opportunities to people in Idaho, but it's going to be there for future generations as well."
—President Barack Obama

The purpose of wilderness designation is to prevent roads and building, the two things required for any level of human access. Nope, I am not wrong. You should read banjomikes post about access.

Have you visited the White Clouds? The scenery is incredible. This mountain range is hidden deep in Idaho and has always been for the more adventurous and access has always been somewhat limited and you have to have the right kind of vehicle to access this area. It is not like you drive on a paved highway and park and start hiking the White Clouds, it is more like you take a bumpy winding dirt road off of the paved highway and drive up hill and down hill for a while before you get into this area.

Sage of Sagle asked us to stick with news stories in this thread so here are some tidbits from the local news:

KTVB:
Boulder-White Clouds: 'Idaho solution' comes to fruition

Simpson and Idaho Sen. Jim Risch both called the bill a compromise, and the "Idaho solution."

Access outside of the three designated wilderness areas will not change. Roads and trails currently open to motorized travel will remain open. Sen. Risch said that sort of compromise was part of passing this bill.

"It's not only about preserving it, but also identifying acres that would appropriate for motorized users to have available to them. It was a balanced approach where everybody got something out of it," said Risch.

Bicyclists, however, will have to give up access to some trails. By rule, the Wilderness Act does not allow mechanized vehicles. Vehicles don't have to have a motor to be considered mechanized, and thus, bikes fall under this category.

From the above article I learned that Eugene, OR is called Silicon Forest which is something new to me.

Also in today's news Idaho made #15 out of 51 for best State economy by business insider.

15. Idaho
Memory and computer-chip maker Micron Technologies — recently in the news after talk of a buyout by Chinese tech giant Tsinghua Unigroup that could draw the ire of US regulators — is based in Boise, Idaho.

Idaho's labor market is looking good, with an unemployment rate of just 4.0% and a 2.6% increase in nonfarm payrolls between June 2014 and June 2015. However, the state's per capita GDP of $39,127 and average weekly wage of $782 were both the second lowest among the states.
