We are anticipating a move to Pocatello this summer and am trying to get an idea of what this will mean for my children. Two girls, school aged and very active in community and sports. I'm concerned about the schools there and the LDS influence as we are Baptists. I have heard alot of negative things and I'm very concerned.

Also, interested in housing/rentals in the area as I won't be buying yet another home.

Any information would be helpful! Thanks so much.

Your Baptist kids should get alone great with the LDS kids, since both religions have similar values. I would just suggest that you tell your kids not to tell the LDS kids that they (the LDS kids) aren't "real Christians" since that would be as hurtful as it would be for your kids if the LDS kids were to tell them that they (your kids) aren't "real Christians" (not likely, since Mormons believe all people who look to Christ for salvation are "real Christians"). I don't know if you and your family believe Mormons are Christians or not, but Mormons believe themselves to be Christians and when people tell them they aren't, it generally gets things off on the wrong foot.

My cousins and aunt and uncle live in Pocatello and my cousins were born there and grew up there. They are not mormon in the least, not even jack mormon, just white protestants. But they all love it there and havent had any problems. They joke about the mormon influence and may grumble occasionally but it is nothing serious. They are well liked and have lots of gentile friends.

I got a red hot news flash for you, I lived in Salt Lake City for 6 years, Nothern ID for 17 years, and TX for 11. The Baptists in TX are bigger religous freaks than the Mo's ever thought of being

Yes, please don't worry. There is much tolerance in Pocatello. No undue pressure if you are not LDS. Respect all religions, or lack thereof, and you will be fine. Welcome!

I grew up in Pocatello, left after high school for about 8 years, and have lived here for the past four years. Yes the Mormon population is in a majority and as with all situations, that sometimes leaves the minority feeling slighted and/or disgruntled. Often people are obnoxious and offend their neighbors or friends and people choose to hold it against the church that those people attend instead of acknowledging that there are rotten apples in all churches ;-) Just leave others to their beliefs and politely remind them to leave you to yours, and I shouldn't foresee a problem. You will find a lot to love about Pocatello. It's a bit chilly, but beautiful. Tons of outdoor activities. There is a strong healthy Calvary Baptist church here less than a mile from my home - they run their own private school that I have mormon friends applying their children for admittance. PM me if you have any more questions!

I have a question, I'm thinking about attending ISU in Pocatello. How are Jews represented and treated there?

there are certain programs at ISU that are just excellent and have a national reputation: Accounting, Pharmacy, Dental Hygiene, Nuclear Engineering, to name a few. I wouldn't discourage anyone from attending ISU.

Jews are a small part of the population in Pocatello. Really Small :-) I know they have

There isn't any anti-semitism, unless it's from skinheads going through town and dropping leaflets on doors once every 4 years . . . and then the community gets so upset about it. I don't foresee Jews being discriminated against - if it were to happen it would be an anomaly.

One hallmark of our community is although it's in a conservative area it has a strong libertarian bent that encourages us to stay out of each other's business. I hope that helps!

What about their radio station and program? That's what I'm thinking about going for. Any reputation for that?

It's an excellent program!!!! I am a bit biased, though, my dad is the General Manager of student communications (over radio station and student paper etc) at ISU.

But in all seriousness the ISU communications program has a generous benefactor - Jim Rogers - who has put a lot of his philanthropy money into the program.
