I gotta be honest...if I was being eaten alive by a grizzly but my buddy couldn't get a shot at the bear, I'd be OK with him shooting me in the chest. A bullet is quick...being eaten alive...not so much.

And if my buddy accidentally shot me while trying to kill a bear attacking me...to be frank I'd hope my family would understand...

Here are more details:

Sheriff: Nevada man attacked by grizzly on North Idaho-Montana border died from gunshot wound | Hunting | Idaho Statesman (http://www.idahostatesman.com/2011/09/23/1811140/sheriff-nevada-man-attacked-by.html - broken link)

According to the coroner the bullet seems to have passed through the bear and into the hunter.

The thought had occurred to me, too, that the young hunter may have been trying to help his partner die quickly rather than slowly...but according to his father he didn't realize his friend was dead until he pushed the dead bear off of him (if his dad actually knows the true story). That would correspond to the coroner's assessment. And I also hope that the family of the older hunter--his wife and two girls--may be able to understand the nightmare that took place. Eventually. I think I'll be thinking about this story for quite a while...

Today's article in the Spokesman:
Gunshot killed hunter during grizzly

Quote:
Investigators have indicated to her family they believe the bullet likely hit the bear first, she said.
“It can hit bone mass and it can hit muscle mass, which means it changes the direction of your bullet,” she said. “We’ve been told they are looking at strong evidence that it was a deflection.”
"She" is the young hunter's stepmom.

I don't know, why not ask WWF? (They'll find me as a supporter, I'm also a lifetime natl. geographic subscriber.)

I am familiar with ducks unlimited a group which has done incredible things for wetlands preservation.

The sad thing is that for the overly political types they just can't seem to get their brains around the concept that some people can think for themselves and not be some sort of party platform slave.

Your attempted depiction is sadly ignorant when considering the legacy and hunting reputation of one of the greatest conservationists in US history by the name of roosevelt.

In fact, the most effective and influential modern conservationists actively partner with hunters and other groups with aligned interests. Hunters don't like strip malls any more than a berkley tree sitter.

The World Wildlife Fund? California Condors? Really? The WWF does more to prevent human freedom and welfare than they do to establish and improve habitat. They are largely a global political organization who uses lawyers, lobbyists and other political means to block the development of private and public lands. How many people in Brazil or Botswana live in needless poverty because of the benevolent efforts of the WWF? But I am sure you've thought that through.

Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands - First head of the World Wildlife Fund International: Former card carrying Nazi, who returned his card to Aldolf Hitler in a letter signed "Heil Hitler". Stepped down when discredited in the Lockheed scandals of the 1970's.

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh - Co founder of the WWF. Became head of the World Wildlife Fund in 1981: Prince Philip was quoted in People Magazine; "If [population] isn't controlled voluntarily, it will be controlled involuntarily by an increase in disease, starvation and war." While head of WWF-UK, he extensively collaborated with Sir Julian Huxley, president of the Eugenics Society (read: "human genetic engineering"). Another quote in Deutsche Press Agentur in August 1988; "In the event that I am reincarnated, I would like to return as a deadly virus, in order to contribute something to solve overpopulation."

No, I don't think that I, or any of my hunting buddies, have common ideals or goals with the World Wildlife Fund. If you love your freedom and your fellow man, you may want to do some more research on who you give your money to.

I'd argue the "free" market has more to do with needless poverty and stunted development of third world nations than any NPO/NGO. But in saying that I might be considered a socialist/terrorist, or whatever buzzword y'all use now.

The guy's point remains: hunters and conservation groups should, and in many cases are devoted to the same causes. If they're not, they're ignorant (goes for both).

Yes, there are some extremist conservation/environmental groups out there, just like there are some really stupid, irresponsible, backwoods hunters out there. Both do their best to screw things up for everyone else.

Doesn't change the point, however.

Hunters and conservationists have the same general set of interests... or put another way, their own interests often intertwine and have the same endgame.
