Hi,

I'm new to the forum but I was wondering if there were any racial problems in Salmon, ID. My husband is a traveling therapist and he is looking at a job assignment in Salmon starting in mid-December. I know that it is a relatively small town and was wondering if there would be a problem-he is black and I'm white.

I was also wondering about the weather there during the winter and if there was a lot of snow in town.

It looks like a really beautiful area but we haven't lived in heavy snow for a long time. We have lived mostly in Albuquerque, NM for the past 18 years or so. For the last year and a half we have lived in Grants Pass, OR and North Carolina on various job assignments.

What grocery stores are there? Any organic food around?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I lived in Salmon for 5 years and recently moved to North Idaho.I am hesitant to answer the first question because I am not in your situation but I do not feel you will have any issues, but then I do not claim to know everyone either and how they would react, but it is very, very, very conservative.

The weather in the valley can get pretty cold in the winter months, usually a stretch of below zero happens every year for a week to a month, the snow levels are low most of the time, but the mountains get quite a bit and there is only 2 ways into Salmon and both require going over passes, to the north is Lost Trail it is over 7000 ft. but the highway department does a good job of staying on it, but during a storm I would not recommend driving over it, the same with Gilmore pass to the south it is over 6000 ft. and can be far more rougher in the winter, not a lot of trees so the snow blows right across the highway and it is not uncommon to have whiteouts, many of us always carried water, blankets and a little food in the event you were stuck there for the night, it happens to a few drivers every year, you have to be aware of the weather for that area with that said many people do drive from Salmon to Idaho Falls even in winter just pay attention.

There is only one grocery store, Saveway in town but it does carry organic foods plus there are a few vendors who come up and sell their produce at stands and a Farmer's Market from may to October every Saturday sells organic food.

That part of Idaho is very different form any area you have mentioned, but is some of the most beautiful country I have ever lived in and when I retire I will most likely move back.

Best of luck to you!
