Have you looked at any other part of the state, lovin?
All the activities you're looking for can be found in Boise metroplex, Idaho Falls, Pocatello, and Twin Falls.
When it comes to scenery and nice quiet places to live, all of these places have it to spare. All of Idaho has a sense of community, simply due to how few of us there are.

But there are reasons why we are a relatively small state- the winters here can be very long and cold, the distances are great, and much of the state lacks the conveniences that folks have come to expect. This is an entirely different culture than California, and you may not find some of it to your liking anywhere here, north or south. Lots of Californians and other folks move here and move out in short order because life here, and it's attendant problems, is much different.

I'm not knocking C d'A at all, but the economy in N. Idaho is not as good as it is southward.
Idaho in general has lower wages than other states, and while our housing is also lower, the cost of living is variable; it is lower in some places than others. And while the economy in the lower half of the state may be better, it's not exactly going boom boom.

You would be wise before getting too serious about moving here to come first and look us over, from one end to the other.

Thank you for the soccer link.

I grew up and spent most of my life in small town Ohio so I am very familiar with winters and small town atmospheres... that does not scare me, in fact I welcome it and miss it. As for looking more south, we were originally attracted to the Boise/Meridian area, but the lack of water and dependency on irrigation is something we wish to avoid. It is not, however, out of the question. I would love to learn more about the area and what the water situation is actually like. My husband works from home for a large company so the job situation is not a problem for us, but being close to a larger city (Spokane or Boise) is important to us just in case anything should ever happen.

Thanks again for all of the help... we leave Saturday for our first visit to the area and are most excited!!!

We just got back from our trip to Idaho and LOVED it. We are looking forward to moving there. Thanks so much to all of you who helped in providing information.

We have decided to rent for a year and get to know the area before buying. Like many, we are having trouble finding a suitable rental. We have found a couple in Spirit Lake that seem promising, but that was not an area we ventured out to when there. What is the area like? Is it worth the drive or just too tedious? How hard is winter travel between Spirit Lake and the Post Falls area? Due to our activities we will be travelling back and forth 5-6 days per week.

Thanks so much!!

We went more as a research trip to see if we wanted to move there so we did not do a lot of the tourist type stuff. We spent our time researching gymnastics facilities, karate studios, and churches. We did go to the lake on Sunday afternoon for the concert and had a great time. It was super crowded bit everyone was very nice and polite.
