Hi Idahoans,

We have a six foot fence surrounding our property save for a small section of 4' fence. This is where the moose come in and deposits their stuff each winter. I would like to keep them out. They easily hop the fence.

I was thinking of a 5' fence: wire and wood.

Questions: Would a 5' fence keep out the moose and prevent them from trying to hop the fence? I don;t want to put up a fence that is not high enough to stop the moose from trying.

Same question for a 6' wire and wood.

I like the look of the 5 footer as 4' is noce but too short and 6' seems to tall.

Thanks,
S.

I have several hundred feet of 5' chain link. I have not seen any animals other than a rabbit inside. There are numerous deer and they all go around. Moose often and it seems to be high enough where they would rather go around as well. I even have one spot that is a 'dead end' and they come back out the way they went in. I do have one section that blocks what I think used to be a trail following power lines. I think a moose was ticked off at that one enough and put the hurt on it.

Thanks. I think that 5' would look at lot better than 6'.

Our pastures are all fenced with wood posts and wire fencing at 5 feet high. The moose jump in and out, with no problems which is fine because otherwise, they've taken the fence out or gates down.

Misty brought up something with the pasture. My fence is not out in the open much. Many trees and shrubs and one whole side is a slope so the 5' fence looks more like 8'. My understanding is that in general the animals will not jump over when they can't see a good landing area beyond.
