Paragraph 2 puzzles me also:
Individuals who want to salvage road kill must notify the Idaho Department of Fish and Game within 24 hours either in person, by phone or by Internet to receive a salvage permit within 72 hours.
Excuse my Ignorance but does this mean i could not salvage the kill right away but within 24 hours and until a permit is in hand. I would have to leave the road kill?
Could i take the Road Kill to the nearest Fish & Game office for the permit paperwork?
I'm pretty sure the idea is you can take the roadkill when you find it, and then have 24 hours to notify the DFG. Leaving it for 24 hours would ruin the meat for sure.

Just make sure you get a copy of Tourniquet's "Ode to Roadkill" and listen to it while eating your free meal!

Thanks for the info.
I really don't have any intention of crashing into animals any more than evasive action allows.

The State Highway is responsible for picking up roadkill. Sometimes the state police will pick up a small animal like a dead cat.
All the large game roadkill used to be processed and fed to the state prison inmates after inspection. I wasn't aware of any law that allowed an individual to pick up roadkill; if there is such a law, I wonder if it has the same inspection provision as the old law had. I'm not sure if a deer that died of massive internal organ damage and hemmorage would be fit to eat even if it was processed while fresh.

I've watched dead animals become maggoty in a matter of 4 hours or less during the spring and summer. It's amazing how fast the blowflies go to work.

Here is how it works:
https://fishandgame.idaho.gov/species/roadkill

What is wildlife salvage?

The wildlife collision salvage rule went into effect in Spring 2012. The rule allows for the legal salvage of some game animals killed by auto collisions

How do I salvage roadkill?
  • Before you claim any roadkill salvage, consider the safety of yourself and fellow travelers. Always abide by traffic and safety laws.
  • Did you find or accidentally strike and kill an animal legal for salvage? Pick it up.
  • You have 24 hours to notify Fish and Game, and 72 hours to obtain a salvage permit.
  • You may self-report online or phone our offices to report.
If calling after hours it's important to leave your full name, phone number, address and location of the salvage so a permit may be mailed. If self-reporting a printable permit will be generated.
  • Salvage permits are free.
  • Persons salvaging and consuming this meat do so at their own risk.
What may I salvage?

Individuals may recover and keep wildlife species classified as upland birds, upland game animals, big game, furbearers, and predators that may be lawfully hunted or trapped that have been killed by accidental vehicle-collisions. Unprotected non-game wildlife are also legal for salvage. However, protected non-game wildlife, Threatened or Endangered species, migratory birds (which are federally protected), and other wildlife species not lawfully hunted or trapped may NOT be recovered, possessed, or salvaged.
View List of Salvageable Species
Can I sell it?

You may purchase or sell wildlife parts, except the edible flesh, of wildlife species classified as big game, upland game, upland game birds, furbearers, or rattlesnakes that may be lawfully hunted or trapped that have been killed by accidental vehicle-collisions. Bighorn sheep cannot be purchased, bartered, or sold.

FYI..I don't harvest roadkill but I do know of people who do and they do seem fairly normal.

As far as carcass removal, I mostly see the carcasses hauled off the shoulder and eaten by scavengers till they are consumed or decomposed.

I wonder if anyone has ever hit a cow and tried to harvest it.....big trouble! At least in open range.

We saw a moose hit by Fernan a few months ago. By the time we came back through, it was gone.

Glad someone could use the meat.

Along that line, what does a proper hung moose taste like? And don't say chicken!

Like moose. They have a different flavor than elk or deer, which share a similar flavor.

All taste like wild game; the only wild meat that commonly fools people is buffalo, which tastes almost exactly the same as good beef, and is more tender than most commercial beef. A top cut buffalo steak is better than any steak from a cow.

However, I just ate some alligator for the first time recently, and it does taste like chicken.

I guess what I am saying is, do you like the taste of moose? Is it a meat you would seek out to stock the freezer with as opposed to other game meat.
