Google says 1:36 from Moscow to GEG.

But, there aren't really any ski areas close to Moscow that are in the same league as Schweitzer or Silver Mt, and that seems to be an important requirement for the OP.

Correct. Skiers around here go to Schweitzer. OP mentions a strong family orientation. Thus my comment. Only they will know where their priority may lie.

We do have excellent mt biking.

As a skier i will just ad Silver Mt is going to be a big disappointment to you, if your use to skiing in Colorado. Schweitzer is 10 times a better ski mt.. Heck I will drive right by Silver mt. to go to Lookout to ski.

Wallace or Sagle area would be my thoughts for your move. The only downside with wallace is when the valley goes dead, CDA is your closest local, where sagle has Sandpoint close. Having worked in Kellogg, it is a ok little town, and the schools seemed to be alright. It is dominated by the car dealership, Dave Smith, but that brought good internet in so thats a bonus.

Thanks so much for all the responses. I really appreciate it! Skiing and mountain biking are important but we have pretty low expectations- we've been in Wisconsin for the past few years so silver mt is going to be an improvement. We plan to check out Wallace, Sandpoint, and Coeur D'Alene for sure. That's interesting about the good internet noted in Kellogg- that will be a consideration for me since I work from home. We're super excited to explore the area this spring. Thanks again all!

FWIW, when my wife, son, and I were up looking at acreage in NID, we spent an afternoon in Wallace and absolutely loved it. But for your needs, it sounds like Sandpoint is place for you. If I had my druthers that's where I would've moved, but I was outvoted 2-1.
