It's been a long search, but we finally decided on a home in the Blanchard area. As we pack and wave goodbye to the pleasant countryside, but politically hostile pacific north west we are looking for any and all advice on service connections and handling all the little chores that go along with settling in.

TV Cable v. Satellite Dish?
Internet service - computer geek for wi-fi hook up and wireless install
Garbage disposal - landfill
Snow blower v. shovel (or local teens)
Nursery - we need quick growing trees for privacy buffer
Excavators / trucking - we need dirt
Plumber / carpenter (Clean and reliable only, please)
Hikers
Target Shooters

Anything to know, look out for, anticipate, enjoy or just chat about would be appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks.

Does the "sierra" indicate you came from Calif or Nev?

Hi Baynative,

Came from Ca., Pollock Pines (between Lake Tahoe and Placerville) and am starting my 4th month living here in Idaho and loving it. Took 2 years of looking and planning but well worth the time put in to research Id., find a home and sell ours.

TV Cable vs. Satellite - I'd be surprised if cable is an option for you in Blanchard, but if it is available the Internet service will be much better with cable vs. satellite, and you can probably get a better deal by bundling your TV and Internet with the same provider. Typically your Internet service provider can help with initial set up when they install your system.

Garbage Disposal - There is a county transfer station located in Blanchard off Hwy 41. The Bonner County Website has all the information you need about this.

Snow removal - Depends on your property, length of driveway, etc. If its very small and you are young and have a strong back a shovel may suffice, if you have a moderately long driveway a walk behind snowblower may be an option. People with bigger areas to clear typically use a tractor with a snow blade or snow blower, or an ATV with a blade, or sometimes a pickup with a blade. Lots of different solutions, many opinions about what works best, and often it will depend on other factors than snow removal. For example, do you want the ATV for recreational use anyway, or are there other reasons to invest in a small tractor?

Good luck!

Dave

I am plenty familiar with PP as I lived in South Tahoe for 15 years.

We are now settled in Blanchard and looking forward to the seasonal change and a winter we can enjoy.

Thanks for your help.

It took some research but we found that we could get internet service anywhere, any time with a Verizon Wi-Fi Hot Spot. We carry it with us and use the lap top as we explore our new surrounds.
