On plain all-seasons (and being careful) I have done 360s, plowed through intersections unable to stop, lost control going straight and level.
Last year I came up at Thanksgiving to meet with the contractor etc, and rented a Rav4 at Spokane Airport. All-season tires, they told me. I think it was the first big snowfall that happened while I was there, and I had some fun moments driving on ice.... Yikes!

iT'S My understanding that you guys don't wash your cars up there. My best friend who moved to Grangeville who came from CA said they don't even bother polishing or waxing their vehicles.

So a Rav4 is not a sufficient vehicle for this kind of snowfall and weather?

LOL! We've definitely given up on keeping a clean car. Getting to our house involves driving a couple miles on a dirt road, so getting anywhere in anything other than rare ideal road conditions means a dirty car. At first it bothered me, but I quickly adjusted. That said, we don't have anything you'd consider a rare or vintage car.

I think CFF's story shows how important tires are for winter driving. A Rav4 is plenty capable for our conditions.

For $20/mo you can get an unlimited wash at Metro in CDA.

I WOULD rather hand wash it myself as I have always done these past 45 plus years.

I will wash at home anything over about 50 degrees. When winter sets in I will wait for a sunny day that is in the 40s and run down to a manual spray wand wash. I remember one time I had my truck all sudsed up and the temp suddenly dropped leaving me with frozen soap all over.

There are actually a lot of car enthusiasts here. Sandpoint has a great "lost in the fifties " parade, and there are other events in Cda.
Those cars all hibernate.

One thing that would help is to choose not to live in a place where you have to drive on a dirt road to get there.

But, as others have said, most enthusiasts keep their nice cars off the roads when it's messy.
