The soil is terrible down here. You get about 6"-8" of dirt and then it's solid clay, hard as concrete, below that.

Health care in Riggins?

This is the only place I know https://www.stlukesonline.org/commun...amily-medicine

M-F clinic and on call emergency assistance.
I was kinda surprised they even had that. Town of 600. For more options, go an hour or so to Grangeville or McCall.

If you did go there, you'd have to pick your land careful. In a deep, deep, deep valley / canyon. Lots of places might have issues getting morning or late day sun. Can get real hot in summer.

I'd take a look at LaGrande Oregon. Good rainfall, lots of farms. Southwest Oregon has options too.

To clarify on an earlier comment, you can get in the trees if you go 20-30 miles east or southeast of Moscow ID.

Riggins is probably not where you want to be.
Not sure why anyone would suggest it.
It's an isolated fishing destination on the Salmon.
That you're even considering it tells me you've never driven through it.
Seriously, check out Grangeville/Cottonwood.

LaGrande is COLD for gardening. I did spend time looking at LaGrande as well as Riggins.

I did not see a requirement for health care facilities.

Anywhere in the west where there is topography of any sort you have to be careful to pick your "spot". Not just for gardening, but for living!!! It makes a huge difference.

Hot is good.

It is all relative to the alternative. Compared to most of northwest interior LaGrande is mild and blessed with far more rain than anywhere further south. To get more rain, you have to take a lot more snow and colder.

Grangeville might be worth a look. Maybe Orofino. Thompson Falls MT.

There is "corn growing degrees" data on pages like this one near Spirit Lake. http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?idbayv LaGrande far more corn growing friendly by this data. Friendly enough to try or count on? I dunno. Corn is pretty much sugar-water. Corn being the source for high fructose corn syrup. Tomatoes are pretty good but essentially a sugar water fruit. Combine corn syrup and tomatoes and you have sweet, low nutrition ketchup. Fresh is better... by degree. For nutrition, the dark green stuff is more valuable.

Thanks for the info. We're pulling Moscow as a destination due to the lack of specialized medical care needed for my husband. The soil info adds weight to that too. Many thanks to all of you for your advice!

There are places on Palouse that supposedly have the deepest topsoil in country or world. But maybe not everywhere, especially not say a scrapped flat lot.

If Moscow doesn't have the health care needed, you may want to look closer into Spokane (9 Mile Falls or Mead) or near Boise or Medford. Some place bigger or way bigger than Moscow ID.

Gritman Medical and Pullman Regional are in a constant pissing match of egos. Between the two of them, they have some of the nicest and newest equipment in the country. Aside from major trauma care, I can't imagine what they wouldn't be able to cover. If you can't find it here, you wouldn't be able to find it anywhere with less than a quarter million people.
